FAQs on SRA READING LABORATORIES
Who may use the reading laboratories?
- Only learners who read and work independently use the materials. Hence, if grade 1 pupils read and work independently, they may use the reading laboratories. If they read but do not work on their own yet, they cannot use the laboratories.
What can the independent reader do?
- First of all, he comprehends what he reads. The independent reader can interpret directions. He knows what to do from step one to the last step. He also knows what to do at each step. He will not need to ask questions frequently.
Can the student choose any color to start using the kit?
-
No, the starting color is determined by teacher thru placement techniques.
Should all power builders in a level be used before student goes to next level?
-
No, there is no need for all the power builders in any one level to be used before a student goes to the next.
When may a student move to another level or color?
-
When scores do not fluctuate anymore and when they are stable already (scores of at least 80%), the student may move to next level. Teacher, in conference with the student, determines when the learner moves to another level.
Are there 1aa, 1bb, 1cc kits?
- No, there are no 1aa, 1bb, nor 1cc kits. There are double-lettered workbooks only.
Why are there 1a, 1aa; 1b, 1bb; 1c, 1cc workbooks?
-
There are 16 Listening stories all in all in one kit. They are found in the Listening to Literature Teacher’s Book and also in the audio tapes. The single lettered workbooks (1a,1b,1c) contain the exercises for Listening Skills stories nos. 1 to 8; the double-lettered workbooks have the Listening Skills stories nos. 9 to the 16th.
How many times a week may the SRA Laboratories kits be used?
-
The laboratories may be used once a week, spread throughout the year. However, some schools may have reasons to use the materials more frequently and may want to use them twice a week. Teacher may also require certain students t use the materials more frequently than once a week.
May the kits be used without workbooks?
-
For optimum effectiveness, each learner must own a workbook. All the monitoring systems are built in the workbooks: answer sheets show the areas they are weak in; charts which show their progress and how they progress; the materials they have read and they still can read; the levels they have gone through in relation to the program.
